ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the expansions, noticing each import of technology and its characteristics. The Pohang Iron and Steel Company Ltd (POSCO), selected for a detailed case study, is the nation’s first integrated iron and steel mill, with a modern, large-scale, continuous production system of iron- and steelmaking and rolling. General information on the iron and steel industry in Korea has been drawn upon, as have POSCO’s internal documents. There were three sets of interviews with POSCO’s engineers, from which a considerable amount of experimental knowledge was acquired. POSCO’s history can be divided into four periods according to the establishment and expansion of facilities: such a division will be adopted in the following analysis, since the import of technology in POSCO is closely related to the expansions. In Korea experience with integrated steel-making was nonexistent prior to the incorporation of POSCO.
