ABSTRACT

The dominant trends in post-war University Adult Education (UAE) have been of the post experience and professional type. And these tendencies have become considerably more marked in the 1970s and 1980s. Nevertheless, there have been other developments which, although very much subsidiary to those major areas of activity, have formed collectively a substantial and significant body of work. The chapter is concerned with the identification and analysis of some of the major aspects of this area within contemporary UAE. It discusses how far, if at all, such approaches are compatible with the core concepts of the liberal tradition. There are two main areas and approaches within this sector of contemporary UAE: industrial studies provision for trade unionists; and community adult education developments of a wide variety. The Liverpool approach has been to concentrate UAE provision upon high level adult education in the social sciences for a relatively small number of working class people.
