ABSTRACT

Geospatial technologies like GIS and GPS have grown rapidly and widely utilized in disaster management. This chapter provides an overview of the roles and applications of various geospatial technologies in landslide, oil spill, and earthquake disaster management. It explains the use of each technology in various stages of a disaster management process, for example, pre-disaster, during disaster, and post-disaster; and provides the current limitations of such technologies in reducing the impacts of these disasters. Finally, it presents examples of recent methods applied to disaster management using different geospatial technologies.
