ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the important and complex processes involved in ending therapy. In TAPP, when worked with well, the ending is a powerful process for change and growth; experiences of loss and separation in the adolescent developmental process are mirrored in the therapeutic relationship. In the therapy, the ending is characterised by two processes which are the focus of this chapter; firstly, of working with the emotionality of the ending in the therapeutic relationship and, secondly, of evaluating and reviewing where the young person is ending therapy, the changes that have occurred and current and future needs, and assessment of how the therapy has impacted on the young person’s developmental process. Different states of mind and feeling in the ending process are discussed and illustrated with case examples. The role of the post treatment review as part of the TAPP structure is discussed.
