ABSTRACT

Empirical knowledge of planning is supported by a significant body of research. Issues such as the extent of planning; the economic viability of corporate planning; the reasons for successes and failures have always been of interest to researchers. Although research into planning practices are becoming popular in the United States, Europe, and other developed countries, little is known of the state of planning in Singapore. The chapter shows that though executives of various nationalities viewed their planning process differently, they were generally supportive of planning. This indicates that the respondents had favourable disposition towards formal corporate planning. What would be of interest next is to examine how they actually planned. When the level of confidence associated with forecasting the environment was examined, the companies of different nationalities were found to differ in four areas, namely domestic economy government policies, financial needs and areas for investments.
