ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a range of issues that inform the subtexts of this volume: the dynamics between collective and individual memories, the role of unusual data types in sociolinguistic research, the limits of collective historiographies, the need for microhistories, the lives and contributions of English public and private citizens to India, and the temporal junctures that now permit such articulations.
