This chapter describes military expenditure compared with other government spending. It explores the trade in major conventional weapons and its impact on developing countries. The chapter analyses the weapons of mass destruction and their past and future repercussions on the environment. It explains the environmental problems caused by the use and elimination of land mines. The chapter provides some remarks on the conversion of industries and workforces from military to civil production. It discusses indirectly reflect the personal feelings and experience of World War II and its consequences, which have resulted in a deep-seated scepticism about military solutions of conflicts. A major legacy of the Cold War is the military-industrial complexes in many countries. The military-industrial complex lives primarily on public funds that are dispersed by politicians. Many of these countries are still shamelessly exploited by the industrial countries and suffer heavily from debts.
