ABSTRACT

This chapter will highlight the specific contributions that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has made to advance process. The Western allies conducted intense dialogue, both individually and collectively, within the framework of the existing cooperative structures of the NATO alliance, with all parties involved in order to promote a satisfactory resolution of these issues. NATO allies are confident that ratification of the START-II Treaty by Russia can also be achieved in the near future, so as to allow for a further dramatic reduction of the strategic nuclear weapons of the United States and Russia to a level of 3000 to 3500 each. A prominent example of NATO's practical contribution to reducing the risks inherited from the Cold War has been the establishment of a working group for the exchange of information on national assistance projects that support the elimination of nuclear weapons in Russia and other new independent states.
