ABSTRACT

Scientists discovered that the artificial hormone recombinant bovine somatotropin could be injected in dairy cows and lead to increased milk production. Seven other hormones have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and are administered to cattle to enhance their weight gains. The uses of estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone in animal production are safe for animals and for persons consuming the meat and animal products. However, the European Union, other countries, and many American consumers object to the use of hormones in animal production. In addition, concerns exist that hormones in animal waste may negatively affect aquatic organisms.
