ABSTRACT

Most everyone has seen organic products in their grocery store and have contemplated whether to select these products over competing products. Qualification for labeling a food product organic is based upon federal legislation, the Organic Foods Production Act. The legislation lists prohibited inputs, materials, and processes. Organic products are certified by agents that are accredited by the US Department of Agriculture. A seal is used to enable consumers to quickly know that a product is certified. There are no systematic differences in the nutritional content of organic and conventional crops. Moreover, it has not been proven that organic food improves human health or well-being.
