ABSTRACT

For many Americans, a big issue with animal production is the disposal of manure and related waste. With large numbers of animals being raised at production facilities, substantial quantities of urine, manure, and other waste by-products need to be disposed of in a manner that does not offend neighbors or contribute to environmental degradation. A federal permitting system applies to large concentrated animal feeding operations and requires them to have a nutrient management plan. Compliance with the provisions of the plans stops egregious surface water pollution. For pollutants from animal waste that are released into the air, few regulatory controls protect our air quality.
