ABSTRACT

Assurances of food safety begin on the farm and continue to the time of consumption. To reduce the risks of unhealthy and contaminated food products, governments enact laws and regulations that govern the production and marketing of animal products. Both the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration have inspection programs to oversee safe processing and to regulate food additives. Governments are also concerned about food waste and food insecurity. They are attempting to develop procedures and programs that would reduce the amounts of food products being discarded and provide additional food to alleviate nutritional deficiencies and hunger.
