ABSTRACT

The meat industry is an important part of the American economy, and meat products are a common fare for entertaining and social gatherings. Interest groups have advanced regulatory controls to reduce environmental pollution, the release of greenhouse gasses, animal suffering, and the safety of workers in meat processing plants. Producers and marketers continue to adjust their practices in response to public demands and market prices. The industry has worked with governmental agencies to address issues and enhance the safety and quality of meat products.
