ABSTRACT

Chickens are raised quite differently from larger food animals, and their production practices are being scrutinized due to concerns they are being treated poorly. Producers are adopting practices to limit suffering from beak trimming and induced molting, and to improve air quality in structures housing chickens. Consumers want eggs from birds that were not kept in cages. Consumers also are selecting products from chickens that were raised without antibiotics or were provided freedom of movement.
