ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the description and analysis of Danish, Dutch and Swedish transport policies in the 90s with a more detailed background. It presents knowledge of the use of energy resources in the transport sector and its impact on the global and regional environment. The chapter discusses the implications of increasing road transport for global energy demand and for the global environment. The energy use of the global transport sector is at present heavily dominated by oil products. The greenhouse gases have attracted most interest in the global perspective, as they are seen as the greatest potential threat to the long-term sustainability on a global scale. The chapter aims to survey the present trends in car ownership and car use. There are many indications that global car ownership and car use will increase in highly motorized regions as well as in less motorized regions.
