ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several management principles, theories, and approaches that help guide decision-making and action in many organizations, including colleges and universities. It is important to note no single principle, theory, or approach is best suited for every institution. For many the study of management began in the early twentieth century with the work of Frederick Taylor and his concept of scientific management. Management and managerial processes are not incompatible with the shared governance structures present on many of college and university campuses; in fact, they can be used to support them. The word “strategic” is perhaps one of the most over-used and inappropriately applied words in organizations. The organizing function of management is key to making the plan a reality through wise use of organizational resources. While managers engage in planning, the concept of management is most often associated with the implementation of a plan. The effective management of higher education institutions is of paramount importance.
