ABSTRACT

The organizations implementing research in Japan fall into the following broad categories: universities, national and public laboratories, private laboratories, special corporations, industrial research organizations. The number of universities grew rapidly to accompany the postwar mandatory schooling up to high school level. Upon high school graduation, some 25 per cent of the students advance to universities, 10 per cent to junior colleges, and 10 to 20 per cent to other types of educational institutions. National laboratories are technological research organizations set up by the government for the specific policies of the various ministries and agencies. Private laboratories can be grouped under the following categories: research laboratories in the form of private corporations, research laboratories in the form of foundations, and technological research associations. Technology centres fall into six main groups: industrial and domestic materials, building and construction industries, industrial and domestic products, engineering industries, textile industries, and technological services to industry.
