ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to unravel the contributions of Kuki women in times of adverse periods, particularly during the Anglo-Kuki War whose invisible yet significant contribution and role allow the men to battle against the imperial ruler for three consecutive years and stoically fend the village amidst hardships and hunger from the limited sources available. Despite the fact that the socio-cultural and political spheres of Kuki society was never complete without their women, in which every aspect of it hinged around them due to their contributions, they occupy a marginalise position in the society. Hence, like all historical narratives of war and women, the Anglo-Kuki War 1917–1919 historical records snuff out women’s roles during the war years, but in fact beyond the public eye it is them who have supported to the cause with as much sacrifice as the men and as much suffering as the men, even though their experiences have been diluted in the dust of time due to deficient historical sources and a lack of cognisance of women’s roles by the society.
