ABSTRACT

Almost every industry is experiencing change as technology becomes more prevalent in the economy. This chapter presents a higher education case study—Scott Scarborough who was hired as the President of the University of Akron in late June of 2014, replacing a popular president who had been in that position for more than 15 years. While he has the business background to gain the respect of the Board of Trustees, he lacks the experience in higher education that most of his employees have. His various training in business and experience as an administrator at institutions of higher education helped him to garner considerable support from the university's Board of Trustees. Administrators in higher education rose through the ranks of faculty and through levels of administration. Many institutions offer a degree program in higher education administration; graduates might move through that path.
