ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the educational theories for online learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), which serves as a framework for the design of an online course. It discusses the best practices for teaching STEM online, as well as methods to keep students engaged in their learning. The demand of STEM educational programs is due to rise because of the ongoing advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence, and its influence on industry related jobs. The challenge for universities and educators is to understand and implement best practices for teaching STEM programs online, so they can utilize all of the tools and resources available to them to best meet students’ needs in learning. The way that faculty develop and teach courses online in the field of STEM is rapidly changing. The availability of technology tools and the design in the online environments themselves are paving the way for innovative strategies and methods in online learning.
