ABSTRACT

Complex sentences have one main clause-which is the same as a simple sentence - and one or more Subordinate clauses. Subordinate clauses are often called embedded clauses. These Subordinate clauses cannot stand on their own as they do not mak:e sense unless they are attached to the m.ain clause. A clause is a group of words that includes a verb. (See pp. 69--71) Examples of complex sentences with subordinate ( embedded) clauses in italics:

a. The birds, who were flying about collecting twigs, were building their nests.
