ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with three issues that have gained priority as organizations move through the twenty-first century: The globalization of sport, social responsibility and diversity. Each represents an important challenge to management. In this framework, globalization refers to the extension of sport – in all of its manifestations – to other parts of the world. In so doing, students must consider the ethical implications and social responsibilities arising out of this international engagement, including by its very nature the embrace of racial, gender, religious and cultural diversity. The chapter also introduces the international and Olympic sport sector, and illustrates some of the specifics of this segment within the context of the managerial challenges just listed.
