ABSTRACT

The chapter takes a brief look at the industry that game studies are a part of to ground students in reality. The chapter looks at the size of the game industry, its business models, how it is organized, and how games are developed. It explores how the industry has changed away from being centered on hardware owners, major game studios, and publishers. For some years indie developers could survive, only to see even bigger tech companies like Facebook, Apple, Tencent, and Amazon take back the stage.
