ABSTRACT

One barrier to Philosophy for Children (P4C) becoming a more widespread practice in Australia is the dearth of skilled P4C teachers and researchers. Few universities in Australia offer courses about P4C or employ P4C focused researchers. In this chapter, we provide a historical account of P4C courses and subjects taught within Australian universities over the last 30 years. We discuss the content of these courses; how they were initiated; who taught them; and, where relevant, why they were discontinued. We identify potential barriers to the teaching and researching of P4C in universities and make some recommendations for overcoming these barriers.
