ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the historically significant events that led to the formation of the Federation of Philosophy for Children Associations (FAPCA), later the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations (FAPSA). The active work by a few individuals, along with the visits of Lipman and Sharp to Australia in the mid-1980s inspired the growth of p4c across Australasia and has become a dynamic force that has changed the thinking of many students and educators. The associations that constitute FAPSA will continue to have a vital and ongoing impact on the ways young people question, reflect on, and communicate the values of the world around them.
