ABSTRACT

By understanding the function of a behavior it is possible to redirect a child to a more adaptive approach. Investigating the motivation of dysfunctional behavior is a process of scientific discovery often referred to as a functional behavioral analysis. This is done by first asking the child why he/she is behaving in such a manner. Another tool to postulating a theory for the motivation is interviewing the parents. Once we establish what need or want the child is fulfilling by acting in a particular way, we will be able to assist him/her in switching to a more functional manner of achieving his or her goal. This latter part can be done through the implementation of a Success Diary. Prior to doing so, it is important to explore other causes for the behavior, such as medical and environmental.
