ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes financial literacy in France. Data from the 2017 Financial Literacy Survey of the Consumer Finance Research Center (CFCR) are used to assess financial literacy in France, including ten different areas of knowledge (e.g. payments, bank accounts, loans and debt, investments, retirement and planning, etc.). Descriptive statistics about the financial literacy of the whole sample are followed by a correlation analysis to stress where the French are more (and less) knowledgeable. The second part shows the results of empirical analysis devoted to investigating the relationship between individual financial literacy and some socio-demographic characteristics (e.g. age, gender, income, education, etc.). The big picture is that the average rate of correct answers equals 39% (on 50 financial literacy questions). The areas of knowledge where the French performed at their best and worst are ‘bank accounts’ (66% of correct answers) and ‘bonds’ (19% of correct answers).
