ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author suggests the fantasy lecture technique for revising for exams. The technique is based on the idea that it’s easier to tell a story than it is to memorize a list of facts. It actively consolidates the knowledge and works much better than passively reading and re-reading through notes. A favourite revision technique is reading and re-reading lecture notes. It’s a very passive activity and uses only surface processing. Instead, an active reading technique that involves reading, writing, and asking questions can be used. Mindless repetition of the same task is a drain on energy levels. Different senses use different parts of the brain. When studying, a change is as good as a rest. Switching between several types of activity helps to maintain full attention and makes the information more likely to sink in.
