Comparative Perspectives on Taiwan’s Political Economy

Up to this point, we have considered Taiwan’s political and economic development as largely sui generis, as a product of unique historical circumstances and environmental constraints and opportunities. In fact, several of Taiwan’s institutions and processes resemble those of other nations, and its people share attitudes and values with many of their neighbors in East Asia. Only by comparing Taiwan’s developments with those of other similar states can we determine what is unique and what is not.
