ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some comments on several general topics that may pose implications for the education of adults in the United States. It discusses governmental roles in adult education followed closely by a report on a new initiative. Certification developments including credit for prior experience and the continuing education unit are mentioned as are developments in technology. The absence of active governmental involvement in education of adults is cited as both a strength and weakness of adult education in the United States. Changes occuring in American society have been numerous and diverse. Increasing rates of participation by women in adult education is one of the major persistent conclusions that can be obtained from the triennial surveys of adult education. Expanding information has implications for other areas of life in addition to the workplace. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
