ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with in translating the typography of Tristram Shandy. Overflowing with satirical self-reference to its own bibliographical code, this visual novel requires full awareness of the materiality of the text on the page. Marbled pages were just one of the several typographic elements of the novel that had to be translated from one edition to another. The concept of typographical translation thus should not be limited to a resetting of the text in a different typographical tradition or culture. In Portugal, part publication in book form, especially in the case of fiction, seems to be a very risky business under the present trade practices. Sale figures for each volume tend to be unpredictable and be subject to variations. In Tristram Shandy, typographic self-reference links the text to its specific page layout and typographic style and not just with book structure or book form in general.
