ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses characteristic mainly of ultra-conservative and alt-right media – the question of safety and the endangerment of culture. Media in Serbia are mostly controlled by the government which influences their reporting, not only about refugees, but their situation in the country as well. As Melissa Fleming, a spokesperson for the UNHRC, observed, “words matter”. Describing the exodus of people as a ‘refugee crisis’ was wrong, incorrect and inhumane. Refugees were almost invisible in the Serbian media in the first months of their passage through the country. The role of journalism is not to objectively represent different sides to an issue, but also to value them and differentiate among them. According to the recommendations of the International Press Institute, media outlets should not give time or space to extremist views simply to show the other side, but should be prepared to unmask and challenge the hate that some political groups are spreading.
