ABSTRACT

This book illustrates ways in which ‘moving beyond the limits’ concerning leadership and diversity is possible. The chapters come together to form a thought-provoking narrative that links with the overarching ideas in the book regarding leadership, diverse populations, styles of leadership and leadership in organizations. The authors have used their knowledge of what it is like to be part of a diverse community to present very personal accounts of discrimination, prejudice and sexuality and to promote a better understanding of the differences and similarities that make us human. Many people are part of overlapping intersections that are often misunderstood due to the negative stereotypes that are often portrayed within the media. Left unchallenged, these views permeate every part of society. More research is needed and training needs to be improved. We do not want to see ‘cultural competency’ become simply a popular phrase used in organizations to give the appearance of equality for diverse populations, with no true connection and understanding of what it means. The authors have been bold in their chapters as they talk about social justice, fairness, ethical positioning and using power to drive social, cultural and political change.
