ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book argues that Marxist principles reveal the inadequacies of other approaches and provide a sound foundation for adult education practices which can unmask capitalist ideology and generate a counter-hegemony that will equip the working class and its allies to take power. Socialist adult educators need to undertake their own purposeful experiments and reflect critically on these activities in order to develop the working models of socialist pedagogy that are appropriate to their circumstances. Such models can demonstrate clearly the alternatives to those adult education practices which perpetuate capitalist hegemony, and they can make a concrete contribution to the organised struggle against capitalism. The practice of socialist adult education therefore rests on a combination of critical research and critical action. Its effectiveness depends on a coherence of political theory and educational activity.
