ABSTRACT

Spelling rules can be very helpful for those who find English spellings confusing. By understanding why certain spelling patterns occur spellers have additional information to work with when engaging with a variety of different spellings. A number of useful spelling rules depend on sounds made by vowels so it is useful to know how they work. By using cobwebs as a method of trapping words and ideas which flutter into working memory, they can be used to capture key sounds, feelings or events which appear when planning a forthcoming story line. Hard or Soft C Bingo can be played by giving each learner a Bingo card displaying a selection of target words. 25% of words should be unique to that card. Often, learners are not aware that a word such as ‘don’t’ is a contraction made up of two words. They therefore miss out the apostrophe needed to indicate the absence of one, or more, letters.
