ABSTRACT

Children who have suffered trauma may have missed out on some of the experiences that promote healthy development of the brain. Encouraging children to connect with their body through their senses can strengthen their self-awareness and help them to connect to the world around them using their senses. Sensory work can be calming for children, but for some it can become overwhelming. Musical instruments are a fun way to explore sound with children, but pots and pans can work too. Creating a textile bag or box can encourage a sensory connection through touch. It can encourage the child to pay attention, be curious and take risks. Making a sensory bottle for sight can be done using water and adding in various small objects. Children are often able to relate to feeling excited and may link this to a sense of having butterflies or frogs in their tummy.
