ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of what work in the sex industry in Queensland entailed for the women who took part in the study. The clients of most female sex workers in the study were exclusively male. One issue of continuing speculation relates to the income of workers in the sex industry. Almost all female sex workers appear to provide hand relief, vaginal sex and oral sex and many expect that some clients will want to perform oral sex on them. Few women provided anal sex for their clients and the practice of ‘fisting’ was rare. In isolated instances women stated that they had been coerced into non-condom sex and others had made concessions to clients, who were ‘regulars’ or had some other ‘special’ relationship with the worker. Concerns about the link between commercial sex and the spread of disease typically focus on the sex worker with little attention to the clients of sex workers.
