ABSTRACT

As the second chapter approaches political discourse analysis at the contextual level, Chapter 3 adopts Matthiessen’s model of registerial cartography to conduct a registerial analysis of the political discourse of the Umbrella Movement in general and the televised meeting during the movement in particular. This chapter starts with the cline of instantiation in the context of politics and political discourse and moves on to discuss the contextual configuration of field, tenor and mode. Focusing on field, it introduces Matthiessen’s account on the primary and secondary fields of activity. The chapter then applies this theoretical framework to analyze the political discourse collected in the Umbrella Movement. Afterwards, the chapter moves from analyzing the fields of activity to the discussion of tenor and the division of labour among the individual political actors in the two political groups: the HKSAR government and HKFS, the organizer of the Umbrella Movement. It intends to analyze the purposes of their discourse in each turn, and relates these purposes to their institutional roles in their parties to show their division of labour as a team in order to achieve their political agendas in the meeting.
