ABSTRACT

A 48-year-old female with recurrent metastatic breast cancer requires 6 months of chemotherapy. The plan is for her to have infusions around once a week on an outpatient basis. The patient has an active lifestyle and enjoys swimming regularly. She is right handed and has previously had a right mastectomy and axillary node clearance. On examination, she has good peripheral veins in both arms, although the right arm is slightly swollen compared to the left. She has normal basilic and brachial veins bilaterally and normal internal jugular veins on both sides. The optimal choice for venous access in this patient is: Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter line via the right arm. Midline via the left arm. Tunnelled catheter via the left arm. Totally implanted port via the left internal jugular vein. Central non-tunnelled line via the right internal jugular vein.
