ABSTRACT

It is clear that new media are offering learning pathways that are changing the ways that people seek information. How much, and in what ways, do such media assist learning? In this chapter, the strengths and weaknesses of new media are discussed, noting how they divide people along socio-economic and demographic lines. Examples are drawn of how the case story authors approached learning from the Internet and the relevance of social media is examined. The hazards of misinformation and incorrect information available on the Internet are explored, and tactics for successful searching are provided, including how to judge a credible source. The chapter concludes with suggestions for how assistance can be provided to learners in making such searches.
