Perhaps the first thing to be said about anxiety is that it is not all negative. Without a degree of anxiety we could not survive. The symptoms of anxiety can be many and various. Trait anxiety is seen as being very much a part of an individual’s personality; state anxiety is more transitory and fluctuates in its intensity according to the stress of a particular situation or resulting from physiological factors as in pre-menstrual tension. Having looked at anxiety in the general population, it is useful to see if there are any indications of where the concept of anxiety fits with regard to stammerers. Anxiety control training (ACT) is one of many techniques that address themselves to dealing with anxiety reduction, directly or indirectly. ACT works extremely well for some people. ACT can be an effective way for some people to learn to control anxiety in their lives.
