ABSTRACT

Stammering inhibits open and free communication, which often prevents a person from participating as actively in life as they would wish. The root cause of stammering is anxiety. The immediate cause of stammering is lack of co-ordination between mind and body, as anxiety makes the mind race ahead of the speech and think about everything which has to be said, in an effort to predict problems in saying forthcoming words. Stammering has a tremendous emotional impact upon a person’s life, because the debilitated speech severely restricts freedom of communication. Stammering is a faulty and incorrect mode of speech, which lacks shape, form and continuity. The stammerer is constantly trying to avoid stammering in speaking situations, attempting to transfer the information required with the least amount of stammering possible. Many stammerers have for one reason or another the fixed notion that their stammer cannot be cured and resign themselves to a life of stammering.
