ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a comprehensive structure that allows the therapist to collect data on all relevant dimensions of stammering in order to devise appropriate treatment strategies for children, adolescents and adults. In order for the stammerer and/or family to feel as comfortable as possible during the interview, it is advisable to arrange the seating so that therapist and client face each other without a desk between them and not too close or too distant. Due to the complexity of stammering, a variety of methods may be used to collect the necessary information. The measurement of severity is usually based on a global assessment to ascertain the degree of impairment in the stammerer’s ability to use speech for social and vocational purposes. Making the differentiation between stammering and cluttering can sometimes be difficult because in some cases there is evidence of both stammering and cluttering behavior.
