ABSTRACT

This paper aims at examining the social security rights of Indian migrants in Europe. It will inquire whether Indian migrants who have contributed to the social security system in Europe can export their benefits once they return to India. This paper will concentrate on two case studies: the UK and Belgium. The choice of the case studies will permit to highlight interesting elements about the relevance of social security coordination between countries. The UK is the first country of destination in Europe for Indian migrants. Despite the relevance of the Indian population in the UK, there is no bilateral agreement on social security between the two countries. On the other hand, the Indian population in Belgium is not as numerous but it was the first bilateral agreement signed by India with an European country (Editorial, 2009a). At the end, this paper will answer whether Indian migrants are in a losing or a winning situation with regard to their social security benefits when they come to work in either Belgium or the UK (Editorial, 2009b, 2001, 2002, 2012).
