ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on attributes of and influences on information technology (IT) projects. In the world of information technology, a project is successful if it meets the needs of the “customer” or principal stakeholder. IT project goals include automation of business tasks and functions within subobjectives of scope, duration, budget, and quality. “Good governance practice” means clear and continual communication to enable understanding of project status and issue resolution. A configurable dashboard system typically provides analytics and views of the data to stakeholders on demand. The basic process of managing projects, defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) published by the Project Management Institute, establishes the measurement of project progress as a critical success factor. The purpose of governance and project management control is to manage the conditions that cause defects to occur, and allow changes to be made to mitigate risks and address issues before they become out of hand or too expensive to fix.
