ABSTRACT
Paediatrics is the branch of medicine which specialises in the field of childcare and childhood illnesses. Child psychiatry is specifically related to the mental and emotional difficulties which children and adolescents encounter. children were perceived as little adults, rather than as new and maturing individuals. Later writers, researchers and clinicians have built on S. Freud's early foundations. Child psychiatry is specifically related to the mental and emotional difficulties which children and adolescents encounter. Psychoses are very rare and infrequent amongst children. Manic depression and schizophrenia rarely occur. Parents, in particular, need help in acquiring the necessary skills to understand and manage their children's excited behaviour and must not be allowed to feel that they have failed because the hyperkinetic child demands knowledge and skills which parents do not normally have. Tranquillising medication for such children is helpful in controlling some of the hyperactivity.
