ABSTRACT

In July 1977 Nihon Keibi Hosho participated in the establishment of Japan Nuclear Security System, a joint venture with Japan’s three leading private electric power companies: Tokyo Electric Power, Kansai Electric Power, and Chubu Electric Power. Makoto Iida realized that Nihon Keibi Hosho’s work on the development of effective fire alarm and extinguishing equipment could be advanced significantly through consolidation of the two technologies. With the technology and human-based support structure Nihon Keibi Hosho had developed, Iida had the confidence to involve the company in the design of large-scale security systems. Two years later, in June 1980, Iida launched SECOM Systems Company, Nihon Keibi Hosho’s engineering arm. SECOM’s innovative view of network architecture conceptualized the network as an entrepreneurial tool, a means to coordinate resources. Clients are sought not only among the owners of existing buildings already using SECOM’s security services but also among those about to construct new facilities.
