ABSTRACT

The ultimate goal of accessibility is to make a certain product or service accessible to a wide range of people, particularly those who have limited functional abilities. The design that aims toward accessibility therefore requires specific principles and approaches. A number of design philosophies and approaches have been developed and proposed in various countries for this purpose—for example, lifespan design, transgenerational design, inclusive design, human-centered design, universal design, and design for all. This chapter reviews the historical background, underlying principles, and strategies of universal design and inclusive design, respectively. In addition, an implication of these two major design concepts for online learning systems is also presented in conjunction with the considerations for design of accessible online learning systems.
