ABSTRACT

Indigenous and rural populations often negotiate with members of the mainstream world. The views, goals, and perspectives of these outsiders, however, often clash with those of local people. When this occurs, misunderstanding, miscommunication, and conflict can emerge. In order to receive a fair hearing, distinct groups need to communicate in ways that their mainstream counterparts can understand and appreciate. Having read this chapter, the reader will:
