ABSTRACT

Freeman and Medoff (1984, pp. 3-5) argue that one of the responsibilities of trade unions is to provide workers with a voice at the workplace and in the political arena. However, although representative democracy is considered fundamental to union organization, questions have been raised as to whether trade unions encourage women to participate in union activity, and if the structures of trade unions allow for the representation of women and their interests at decision-making levels (Cook, Lorwin and Daniels, 1992, p. 43).
